Hands on Training for Ratings
Background: Although Indian Ratings have been employed on board ships for over a century, due to renewed competition from labour supplying countries, there was an urgent need for retraining and further enhancing the hard skills of deck and engine ratings.
Process: Fosma developed a hands-on skill development program for deck and engine ratings which is carried out at the Don Bosco Maritime Academy, Mumbai. The feedback received from owners and ship managers is extremely positive and it is now 5 years since the course is being run continuously. The fees is borne entirely by FMIRO. Neither the companies nor the trainees pay any fees towards programme.
Schedule for Hands on Training at Don Bosco for Deck and Engine Ratings
The course was suspended due to Covid restriction in early 2020. Steps are underway to resume the same.
